Ukraine Delivers Devastating Strategic Blow Deep in Russian Territory

  • Ukraine has just executed one of the most monumental operations of this war.

  • The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), its Special Intelligence Services, carried out remote long-range strikes deep within Russian territory—targeting strategic air bases in Siberia.

  • According to preliminary reports, approximately 42 strategic bombers (which, according to SBU, amounts to around 35% of the strategic bomb fleet) were completely destroyed using FPV drones equipped with explosive payloads.

  • What makes this strike truly historic is the depth and sophistication of the operation.

  • Some of the targets of this attack were located some 2,000+ miles inside Russian - deep in Siberia - far beyond the reach of Ukraine’s typical strike capabilities.

  • The SBU has even revealed key details about the execution: the plan appears to have been in development for over one and a half years, involving the covert transport of containers placed near key airfields.

  • FPV drones were hidden under the container roofs and then launched in coordinated waves targeting the respective airbases.

  • This was a daring, technically advanced operation with massive battlefield implications.

  • Russia’s ability to launch long-range cruise and ballistic missiles from within its own airspace—previously untouchable by Ukrainian air defense—has now been severely degraded.

  • (side note: the SBU’s decision to publicly disclose the attack method is not just a flex of strategic capability. It has now forced Russia into a logistical nightmare. Military bases, sensitive locations, and VIP travel corridors must now be swept for decoy containers—a task that is nearly impossible at scale. The implication is chilling: if Ukraine can strike Russia’s strategic air fleet this way, it could just as easily target high-value individuals, even Putin himself, with similar containerized drone systems.)

  • However, the strategic consequences are even more significant.

  • These bombers are part of Russia’s nuclear triad, alongside submarines and ICBMs.

  • Striking such a devastating blow to one leg of this triad not only shakes Putin’s military prestige, but may also trigger doctrinal rethinking within the Kremlin’s nuclear command structure.

  • This strike also refutes two common myths:

  • 1. As Trump claimed in his Oval Office meeting with Zelensky, that Ukraine has ‘‘no cards’’ to play;

  • 2. That major success on the battlefield against Russia is only Ukraine’s victory.

  • In truth, this action is squarely in the national interest of the United States.

  • Over the past three years, Ukraine has inflicted hundreds of thousands of casualties (around 750,000) on Russian forces, destroyed thousands of tanks, aircraft, naval assets, and developed new drone warfare tactics now being studied and adopted by the Pentagon.

  • And now, it has crippled a core component of Russia’s strategic deterrence capability.

  • China’s ally—Russia—has just lost 42 bombers.

  • And that’s not just Ukraine’s gain - it’s a strategic windfall for the entire Western alliance.

Ukraine’s Deep Strike Alters the Strategic Landscape And Traps Putin In A Dilemma.

  • Of course, such a monumental strike will not come without a number of consequences.
